So you reached the top of the waiting list and you now have the key to the allotment site – congratulations. Now the fun begins.I was on the waiting list for about 3 years and I’ve had my plot since May 2011. So, I’m still a relative newbie. Some people have had plots for over 20 years.
This is a very personal view of how to get started – based on what I’ve learnt from making mistakes and talking to more experienced allotmenteers. I hope it helps.
The allotments at Northfield Avenue have a long history.
Prior to 1832, the land where the current allotments are situated, was known as Ealing Dean Common. The Common was also known as ‘Jackass Common’ as pony races were held there in June.
The history page has the map from 1832, posters from 1818 and other photos from the around the allotments over the last 100 years.
We have 73 people on our waiting list (as of Jan 2015).
- The person on the top of the list put their name down in June 2011.
- The next 7 on the list also joined in 2011.
The allotments in Northfields Avenue are not owned by the council but held in trust by Pathways (link is external), a registered charity.
